VAT Thresholds

The UK has set thresholds that determine whether a business needs to register for VAT. As of April 2024, the registration threshold is £90,000. This means if your taxable turnover exceeds this amount, you must register for VAT1. Conversely, if your turnover falls below £88,000, you can deregister.

VAT Schemes

To simplify VAT accounting, the UK offers several schemes tailored for small businesses. These include:

  • Flat Rate Scheme: Ideal for businesses with a taxable turnover of £150,000 or less. You pay a fixed rate of VAT based on your industry. Only claiming VAT on assets over £2,000.

  • Cash Accounting Scheme: Suitable for businesses with a taxable turnover of £1.35 million or less. VAT is paid when customers pay you, rather than when you issue invoices.

  • Annual Accounting Scheme: Also for businesses with a taxable turnover of £1.35 million or less. You submit one VAT return annually instead of quarterly.

Challenges for Small Businesses

Small businesses in the UK face several challenges related to VAT:

  • Economic Uncertainty: Fluctuations in the economy can make it difficult to predict turnover and VAT liabilities.

  • Price Increases: Increasing prices in current times can cost you customers. However, if you work with other businesses that are VAT registered, becoming VAT registered might be their preference.

  • Access to Funding: Securing capital to manage VAT payments can be challenging, especially for new businesses.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Navigating the complex VAT regulations requires careful attention to detail and often professional advice.

  • Digital Transformation: Keeping up with digital tax filing requirements can be daunting for small businesses.
